Established by order of a Nguyen King in 1924, Nha Trang, now the capital of the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa, is an attractive summer resort. The town, according to popular belief, derives its name from the Cham word "Yakram" meaning bamboo river. Nha Trang's charm comes first of all from the striking blue of its sea and the picturesque nature of its islands. This coastal city has 10km of beach and 19 offshore islands. The main beach runs from Tran Phu Road and is lined with casuarinas and other evergreen trees. The islands' names are associated with local products and legends: Tortoise, Salangane, Bamboo and Husband islets, Fairy mountain...
Nha Trang is also famous for its salangane nests. With a multitude of grottoes the islands off the coast provide an excellent breeding ground for this swift-flying bird. Nha Trang is sunny almost all the year round. Although winter is unknown here it never experiences a hot summer as in the north. The refreshing sea-breeze gives the town an eternal autumn. Diving and snorkeling are so great in Nha Trang thanks to the crystal clear water and over 340 kinds of hard corals. The islands support a variety of habitats and ecosystems, including fringing coral reef, mangrove and sea grass, with an adjacent deep-water upwelling that supports the local fishing industry. There are a lot of diving centers in Nha Trang, also available for certification training.

Nha Trang houses many ancient cultural relics. A former habitat of the Cham ethnic minority, the town still preserves many perfect specimens of its culture, the most noteworthy of which is the Thap Ba (Po Nagar Cham tower). The tower, standing 23m high on top of a hill north of the town, was built in 817 and is dedicated to Po Nagar who according to the Chams, initiated rice cultivation to the region. The Thap Ba hot mineral spring center is 4 km away from the city center, right behind the magnificient Ponar towers. ♦ Institute of Oceanography
The Institute of Oceanography is located on an elevated land, at 1 Cau Da St., next to Cau Da Wharf, about 6km from the centre of Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province. Established in 1923, it was one of the first scientific research centres in Vietnam. Taking the National Highway I from Nhatrang city about 50km towards the north, turning right at the three-way crossroads and going further by 14km, you will reach Doc Let resort. ♦ Hon Mun Island
Hon Mun Island is situated in Nha Trang bay and famous for the marine protected areas where visitors dive for primeval corals. Hon Mun Island has several Salangane caves which may be seen from the boat. You can travel on a glass-bottomed boat to see corals. Since 2001, it has been the center of the the Hon Mun marine protected areas – the first marine protection projects in Vietnam. The Hon Mun marine protected area is made up of Hon Tre, the large island and several islets: Hon Mieu, Hon Tam, Hon Mot, Hon Mun, Hon Cau, Hon Vung, Hon Rom, Hon Noc and the surrounding waters. This is the area where the most diversified coral reef in Vietnam is found. It has an international importance as the variety of corals here is comparable to that of the India-Pacific ocean international coral reef center. ♦ Hon Ong
Hon Ong is 60 km away from Nha Trang city to the north. The sea here is extremely pure and blue. If you come here in the period between February and May (breeding seasons of medusa and crustacean), you can see schools of whales playing freely together near the shore. After wallowing in the nature, swimming, diving, angling or traveling on sail boat, you can go up to the mountain to visit ethnic houses on stilts, enjoy fresh sea food: steamed lobsters, fried sea snakes, grilled arcas...
